I don’t know the answer. but alcoholic drinks have calories but offer little to no nutritional value, and since I’m being very careful about the number of calories I take in everyday, I would like to maximize the potential nutritional benefits from every one. So I’m limiting my alcohol intake.
I googled “why alcohol makes you fat” and. got almost 5 million hits.
If I were trying to lose weight, I would not drink any of my calories, which includes alcohol. Do a google search and read up if you want more details.
I’ve maintained a 50 pound weight loss since 1995 while including moderate drinking.
I probably have a beer or cider 4-5 nights of the week.
Others may disagree, but I find it can be part of a healthy lifestyle for me.
I also drink a small amount. every night. Usually a half a glass of wine or half a light beer and still was able to lose weight.
My problem with wine (at home) is portion. control. We can’t use regular wine glasses because it’s too easy for the parrots to knock them over, so we use bigger, sturdier glasses, which means I’d pour myself way more than a glass!
The beer/cider is perfect because it’s already portioned out and it’s very rare that I want a second bottle.
I did see individual juice-box wine when we went to a grocery store in Spain, though I’m not sure about the quality!
any. parrot in particular that does that?
Yes, but not the one you’d think. Not Rocky! One of my caiques must have been given alcohol on a regular basis in his old home because he gets so excited when he sees a wine bottle and we can’t leave wine or beer unattended or he’s over there drinking.
I don’t have a picture of that, but here’s my grey drinking some Gatorade I’d left unattended after a run.
too funny!. Sometimes when I read your parrot stories I am so tempted to get one. Good thing they live so long. That always kills my urge.
If you lived closer, I’d send Rocky. to live with you for a week and that would kill any urge you might have
I guess I was complaining about him a bit too much up at the rescue because the director told me she’d found a home for him. I couldn’t believe it! WTF? He has a home with us!
He turned 22 last week. And we’ve probably got at least another 20 years with him.
one day. would probably do it!
I have the same problem. not because I use big glasses, but because one glass of wine makes me SO want another. It’s a vicious cycle.
But…red wine has some great health benefits! So if I overdo it once a week, I don’t beat myself up. However, I think in the past week, I have drank wine on 4 nights…that is not so good. Oops!
I saw on the food network that wine. in a box/with a cap is going to become more of the norm since it keeps better..
same here. its all or nothing for me. so I am slowly transitioning to nothing. Its a slow transition, but I really am cutting back!
good for you!. we rarely keep wine at home, so I was doing really well, but then my bf’s stepmom visited. She is one of the most wine-loving and generous people I know—she bought us 8 (!) bottles. We don’t even have a wine rack! lol
So the past couple of weeks I’ve been…not so good. Gonna have to have another party to go through this stuff!
Yes, def all or nothing!!!!!! §.
you can find four-packs of mini wine bottles. At a lot of big liquor stores. You won’t find any from unique wineries — it’s a lot of Beringer and Robert Mondavi — but it’s nice for portion control.
There are a lot of places around here that are now selling half bottles, too. So if you split it with your husband, there’s less of a chance that you can go heavy on a pour.
Interesting. I hadn’t seen smaller bottles here. My H recently started home brewing, so I think I’m relegated to beer and cider at least until the newness and his pride of his creations wears off.
Yes, they have tons of sugar and slow. your metabolism. Depending on what kinds of course. Hard alcohal is usually cut with a juice or soda and beers are loaded with carbs. Light beers are better but still 100 cals per beer and even the light ones slow your metabolism. Note the term “beer belly” on people who drink lots of it. Heavy drinkers tend to hold thier weight in thier middle section.
that would be *me*. I had to cut down to virtually nothing… boo!
I just cut way back too. I used to hold no weight in my mid-section; my stomach was actually slightly concave between my hipbones at times. I have been noticing lately that even though my arms and legs are really lean and muscular, that my abdomen is still slightly rounded. I have to attribute this to too much wine in the evening with my BF, so I have cut it out completely during the week. Now just on Friday or Saturday nights.
that’s what I’m working on. just weekends.
I became a daily beer drinker after work w/ the coworkers for quite some years. Started off drinking mixed drinks but found a “dollar beer” place and tried my first beer. Now I’m strictly a beer drinker but have to change that.
I have started for the last few weeks to just drink on weekends.
yeah, my BF and I had gotten very into the wine. thing—trying different kinds, subscribing to Wine Advocate, going to tastings, etc. The problem started when summer came around and I switched from red to white. He still prefers red, so then he would pick up one bottle of each in the evening. And, as someone else mentioned, once the bottle is open, wellll…..let’s just say it had become a habit to drink a bottle of wine at night.

that’s the one! §.
alcohol and weight gain. It is my understanding that the body uses different sources of fuels in kind of a layered effect. It will use glycogen (sugars) first, and barring a quick supply of glycogen it then turns to body fat. With alcohol, though, it actually burns the alcohol first, THEN any sugars in the alcohol before it can actually get to the body fat. I’ve heard that wine has very beneficial properties to it – but I suppose if you are trying to lose weight then that is why they always eliminate the alcohol – because of the layers the body has to burn through first as fuel. Plus, it is true that you are just drinking your calories then .
