Whats the diet food like over there?. Hey there, I’m an Aussie gal moving to the USA in a couple weeks. I’ve been slowly losing weight here and have no idea what to expect on the diet food front over there. I’ve heard y’all have a great range of low/no fat/cal stuff to choose from?
Also, whats the standard price for a gym membership over there?
I can’t run because of a bum knee, what other outdoor activities can people suggest for winter?
Thanks heaps!

I’m not a big fan. of “diet food”, but I would say that unless you are living in a very small town, most grocery stores will have a large assortment of low/no cal stuff. Veggies, fruits, grains and lean protein will be everywhere.
I visited my smallish hometown in MN in December, and I was amazed at the variety of ethnic foods available in the grocery stores.
Welcome to the U.S. We have a new president. Yay!!
Awesome. Thanks for that, someone was telling me there was a really great range. I’m not much into processed diet food myself but Im curious to see whats available!
Gym. It will cost you about 75-100 per month for one of the nice ones.
Cheers!. Thats about the same as over here
really depends on where you live.. It could be anywhere from $20/month to +$150. I pay about $30 a month in Seattle.
I’ll be in…. Tacoma, so not small town or anything. Hopefully it wont kill my budget too much then
just south of me.. I would be surprised if you had to pay $75-100 a month in Tacoma, unless you want a very high-end gym.
My rock gym is $62 a month and. that includes top-rope, lead climbing, and bouldering, along with plenty of classes and a fully stocked gym.
My gym costs $10 a month.. (one of them – I get a membership to a school gym, too, which is nicer – my paid gym membership is a back-up)
Some cost around 29.99 – but the really, really great ones around her seem to cost around 60.00 a month.
I also pay $10 a month. and my gym has everything I need, but no frills (they don’t provide towels or anything, and they don’t have many classes).
The more expensive gyms in the area are between $30-50 a month.
I pay $62 a month for my gym. but my gym has a huge pool, and a large daycare area where I can keep my son for free while I work out. It’s a family membership, so it’s a little higher than some of the others you’ve seen listed here.
As for diet food, Bells really pegged it. You CAN find plenty of dieter-friendly packaged meals and things, but regular ol’ healthy food like grains, fruits, veggies, and lean proteins can be found everywhere, so you won’t have any problem with that.
Welcome! I hope you have a good time while you’re here. Is this a permanent move, or are you only going to be in the US for a certain period of time?
something tokeep in mind…. if you are moving to an apartment complex, see if they have a fitness center. My apartment has a free fitness center that is small, but has a variety of cardio machines and weights, and really nobody really ever uses it.
I also have a fitness center at my work. I paid ten dollars (total) for an access card and it too is small, but again, not used much.
I belong to Planet Fitness, and that is $10 per month. I have been a member now for over 3 years. No bells and whistles, just a practical gym with lots of cardio machines, free weights and stationary weight machines. Very relaxed environment.
