the traditional dinner. turkey, stuffing potatos and peas. Although this year, I asked my mom if she’d rock out with the veggies. So along with the peas (really, that was the only veggie we used to have) she’s making brussel sprouts, beans, carrots and cauliflower. And I’m bringing a salad. I’m kind of excited about all the veggies.
We don’t do dessert so I don’t have to worry abuot that this year.
Good for you for doing something different. Shrimp Creole sounds excellent!
It is most excellent. In the past, I’ve done steak, chocolate cake…. etc.
I just can’t do anymore.
The pumpkin pie might be odd, but my girl was looking forward to it at Thanksgiving and we had apple instead.
Ironically, she’s probably forgotten about it…
very traditional turkey with dressing,. potatoes and gravy, cranberry sauce, and some sort of sweet potato recipe. DH wants the really decadent sweet potatoes with maple cream recipe, and I was thinking about going a little lighter.
We have a tradition of making cheddar biscuits with ham and chutney for breakfast.
I’ve got a good southern sweet potato casserole. recipe.
I don’t know how difo friendly it is, but I think it is lighter than similar ones I’ve seen.
Heh heh. I started a tradition of cooking “egg in a hole” for Christmas morning.
Hubs hates that tradition.
I didn’t know anyone else. actually called it ” egg in a hole” LOL! My fam does that we have it for Christmas morning too!!!!
I’ve heard it. called “toad in a hole” – same thing?
Could be…. Looks like this
=( my work comp. is weird I can’t see pics..
It’s just a peice of toast with a whole in the middle big enough to fry an egg with the egg cooked in the middle. Well at least at my house =0)
yeah, that’s it §.
I’m def going to let my mother know…. There are other people on this earth that make egg in the hole. LMAO!
Are you kidding?. It’s a freaking STAPLE!
Yep, that’s the “dish” I was thinking of. Don’t know where “toad” came from, though.
Well I knew other ppl. Made it I just figured that it had some kinda fancy name or something LOL
But, but, but. it’s a special Christmas tradition for us!
TRUE!!!!!!! §.
toad in a hole. is sausage baked into a flour egg batter – at least to an Englishman
the egg in middle of toast dish, my husband’s family sometimes calls firehouse eggs.
Sounds good =0) §.
No clue!. I am going to a Christmas party (which I might add I don’t really want to go to) and I have no idea what it will be like.
OT, I am not looking forward to this because I get to meet my bf’s racist granny. She doesn’t like anyone who isn’t Korean, and likes to play nice to your face and talk about you behind your back.
I have met most of the other family members who will be there, so I’m not stressing about them. Just not looking forward to socializing with a person who basically is going to hate me for no reason. On a funny note, my mom and I were laughing and saying I should just get drunk so at least she would have a reason to hate me, LOL. But I haven’t had a drink in almost a year, so no sense in breaking my winning streak!
I’m hoping for some good Korean food at least!
gluten free lasagne. We’re doing Christmas on the 26th, because that’s when it works out for everyone.
soup and grilled cheeses : (. What kind of crap is that, Mom??
for Christmas? sheesh. §.
I know! §.
Have two dinners. First at my dad’s which will be awful. They have smoked since practically birth and have no taste buds left.
I am bringing my famous fruit salad so we can eat alot of that ha ha.
Second at Fmil’s – not sure what is on the menu, but it will be healhty and delish I am sure.
Got off easy there, all I have to bring is the wine!
oh – almost forgot, great hiking at dad’s so. I’ll even get a good workout in!
I have THREE dinners to go to… One at my mom’s Christmas eve which will be ham, green bean casserole, ect.
Christmas lunch at my dad’s which is going to be smoked goose, and I don’t even know what else.
And…..
Christmas dinner at my bf’s Grandmothers, Which is some of the best Italian cooking I’ve ever had in my life.
I’ve decided to just bring a salad to dad’s and have salad with a small portion of smoked goose and call it a day with that. But at my bf’s granny’s I will be partaking in the LASAGNA,fo sho!
Have you ever had goose?. If so, what is it like?
Lucky on the lasagna!
Nope not yet.. I’m going to try it this year. He’s always made smoked duck, I really like smoked duck. But, I guess he’s tryin something new this year… Ill let ya know what it’s like.
I cant WAIT for the lasagna! Just a little peice!
Christmas Eve. will be at my Aunts. She’s having:
appetizers: baked brie w/crackers
something with smoked salmon
probably spiked eggnog
main course:
ham
Lithuanian kugelis (potato pudding)
a veggie and/or salad
organic wine
dessert:
Christmas cookies
David Glass cakes
coffee
I have to bring something–I’m thinking maybe something with sweetpotato or bn squash.
Christmas Day is totally up in the air still. Maybe something small and lowkey at my house or my mom’s.
Christmas will be celebrated with my mom’s side of the family on Sunday. That dinner will be–
Appetizers:
chocolates
something I bring (haven’t decided what yet)
Main Course:
Roast beef or Ham (not sure which)
Baked mac and cheese
at least 2 veggies
salad
Dessert:
cookies
not sure, maybe pie?
Not sure yet, to be honest…. Mom and stepdad are coming to visit and we have no plans as of right now.
They have been crazy busy, as have I, so my mom and I decided to play to food situation by ear. To be perfectly honest, I’d love to just go out so I don’t have to deal with kitchen clean-up (which is always quite extensive when my mom and I cook together).
turkey with cranberry tangerine sauce. brussels, cauliflower, spicy sweet potato fries and romaine salad
Ham, mashed potatoes or potatoe salad. some kind of veggie, bush’s baked beans. I wanna make a broccoli casserole but never made one before so gotta find me a recipe.
I have one.. Warning: it is very diet unfriendly. =)
LOL Sabotage!! Ok I’m listening
§.
broccoli casserole. this a classic midwest recipe; it has cream of mushroom soup!
2 packages frozen chopped broccoli (I use fresh and steam it)
1 can cream of mushroom soup
1 cup grated sharp cheddar cheese (2 or 4 oz, I forget which)
1 T. chopped onion (I use more)
garlic – salt – pepper to taste
1/2 cup butter
2 cups crushed Cheese Nips or other cheese cracker
Cook broccoli according to package directions. Mix broccoli and everthing but the butter and Cheese Nips. Melt butter and mix with crushed crackers. Put broccoli mixture into casserole dish and top with Cheese Nip mixture. Bake at 350 for 20 minutes or so. I always double the recipe, because I only make it for the holidays, and put it in a 9×13 pyrex pan.
am guessing. but am pretty sure it will end up being something like:
pimento cheese stuffed celery
black and green olives
smoked turkey
roasted turkey
gravy
cranberry relish (possibly homemade, possibly canned)
7 layer salad (i hope this will get left off, but my mom really likes it)
cornbread dressing with sausage
sage dressing
mashed potatoes (these sometimes get “forgotten”)
ambrosia (only if someone brings it)
rolls
green bean or/or asparagus casserole (of the two, i’d rather eat the asparagus casserole)
corn relish (this one is actually difo appropriate)
candied carrots
roasted brussel sprouts or butternut squash ragout
assorted candy including rum balls and tiger butter (this might not show up this year – my grandmother makes it and she isn’t steady of her feet now for candy making)
a pie (probably apple and/or pecan)
a fruitcake
white wine
sparkling juice or cider
coffee
Wow, that’s quite the spread, chi! §.
it is much too much. but it makes my parents happy.
the only thing that saves it is the annual “dispersal of leftovers.” otherwise, my parents would be left with mountains of food afterwards, instead of just a couple of medium sized hills.
We decided on…. turkey meatloaf
a ham (Mom’s contribution)
Turkish potato salad
sauteed italian cut green beans and tomatoes
pita bread
semolina apple crumb pie
roasted butternut squah
that sounds good.. what is turkish potato salad?
I am tilting my head a bit at the pita bread. It seems kind of random. Now I could totally support corn bread…
Turkish potato salad. combined chopped, steamed potatoes, shredded lettuce, tomato, onion, carrot, and cucumber, and dress with lemon juice and olive oil. Season with salt, pepper, red pepper or sumac if you have it, and sprinkle with minced parsley and mint
The potatoes should be warm–this is a warm potato salad.
Delicious!
The pita bread was only because my mom wanted some form of bread and it was something I had on hand that was whole grain and yummy.
