Q about responding to hunger. What is a hunger signal that I should respond to?

When my stomach is growling I know I’m hungry so I’ll eat. But when my stomach is not growling and I’m just going and opening pantry cabinets and fishing around for something that looks appetizing, should I ignore that? Is that just nervous eating to be avoided?

hmmmm.. I don’t wait until my stomach is growling to eat, but I do wait until I start having that empty feeling that comes before the growling stage.

When you are prowling the pantry, do you ever check in with yourself to see how you are feeling? Bored, stressed, nervous, fidgety, etc.?

    • chidame Says:

unless. insurance magically pays for it, no.

it would have to be a right fit kind of situation, anyway. i’m a hands-off kind of person. you know how people can either be considered cats or dogs at heart? the husband says i’m a dog person trapped in a cat person’s body.

    • BellsOn Says:

sorry.. My husband is a big guy, so I blame him.

It is highly unlikely you will have a kid with the size head mine has. I also was 12 days overdue, which makes a difference.

Are you going to have a midwife or doula? I really wish I had someone to advocate for me when I was in labor. They let me push for 3 hours, which really messed me up.

holy jesus!. 9lbs 12oz! How is your body still intact Bellsy!?!?!

    • BellsOn Says:

=). My stomach skin will never be the same, that’s for sure.

    • ladyjess429 Says:

Egad!. I should say not…although I think one of my cousins was a over 10lbs. Then again now that he’s grown he’s about 6′8″ and 330lbs. So he was destined to be a big boy! LOL.

What is almond butter–litterally little bits of. almond you put in melted butter, or a product you buy at the grocery store ready-made?

    • BellsOn Says:

similar to peanut butter.. a paste made of ground almonds. You can also buy hazelnut butter, etc.

Not that you asked, but tahini is sesame seed butter/paste. I love tahini. It’s what makes hummus so delicious. ♥

    • chidame Says:

ot. i am making hummus today.

      woo!

    • BellsOn Says:

even more ot. did you get some maternity pants?

      I love homemade hummus. :)

    • nogoodhandlename Says:

yeah, i wanna know too!! §.

    • chidame Says:

yes. since i couldn’t handle actually trying anything on marked maternity and then buying it, i ordered 3 pairs online. the box came yesterday.

i finally put the maternity jeans last night. it is hard to get used to elastic waist pants, but i have to admit that it was a very nice feeling to be wearing something that actually fit my legs and rear without being baggy or tight, with nothing trying to cut me in half around the middle. the husband agreed that if you didn’t know the band was there, you wouldn’t know that the jeans are maternity. the only weird part for me was feeling like i had to constantly hike them up. i’m hoping that when there is more for the elastic part to hold onto, they won’t feel like they are slipping so much.

i have yet to summon up the nerve to try the more work appropriate pants. i also ordered and have not tried on some long sleeve maternity tshirts.

i kept some clothes from bigger sizes for maternity wear, just in case. some of the shirts don’t work so much, bc they look short, and the pants i’ve already sent to the thrift store. but the bras are coming in handy, i have a coat that i’m going to be very grateful for, and 2 of the el cheapo dresses are really great. i can’t find any leggings to wear with them that aren’t the weight of hose. i want to find ones that are thicker, so that i can pad around the house and feel like a hot mama, and be warm at the same time.

this is so long, i might as well keep going. i was so tired of dealing with changing sizes during weight loss and finally felt like i was to the point where i could stop buying/wearing cheap make-do clothes and instead start buying clothes that were quality. that i’m back to making-do makes me want to thump my head against the wall.

      i recall. i do that too –

i open the fridge and i look at what i can just “grab” or think of the things that are available to me — that are outside of planned or even — allotted for — meals.

once, i was really hungry, and i decided to eat some sweet potato. i cooked a few, cut them in half, and split them with my boyfriend…

i found i was SO FULL after eating only a portion of the sweet potato i thought i was hungry enough to eat… that i didn’t want anything any more or anything else. the moral of the story is — you need food fibers from real food.

if you are hungry after eating a meal that has 10g of vegetable/whole grain fiber — then… you need an extra serving of broccoli & some hot tea. or… an apple… or… some cucumber if you’re already at your calorie budgets limitations? — in my opinion, though, you can never eat too many calories throughout the day

to decide to deny yourself plain vegetables… :)

      you need fruits/vegetables to snack!

as a confession?? there are days where i will just… honestly? binge eat apples. i wouldn’t really consider them — a binge, that’s too dramatic — but i will eat 5 apples over the course of a day, that is… too many carbohydrates for me to suggest doing with any faith in that being a good diet decision –

but — i rationalize — if it wasn’t for these apples, what, would i of eaten potato chips???

or i would’ve been “hungry” (psychologically??) or “whiny” at least, haha.

so in a way, i allow myself to eat apples like a crazy woman, because i am a woman recovering from having eaten entire “family sized” bags of potato chips in one sitting –only in the recent span of 3-4 years back.

i don’t suggest you eat that many apples, but you should definitely plan out *good snacks* to satisfy your hunger be it serious & due to your stomach not receiving enough nutrition… :)

what i like to do — is to factor into my saturated fat budget — a large serving of almond butter & use celery (or any other veggie, really! mostly veggies + a little fruit = great!) to dip it. it tastes so good & it makes you really full…

I haven’t thought about it before, but I’ll try. next time I find myself scanning the pantry for no particular reason.

    • diamonds_nine Says:

I have found that, when I’m hungry,. almost anything looks good.

If I’m opening the fridge or the pantry and I have to stand in front of it for 5 minutes to find something that looks good, I’m not hungry, I’m bored.

    • ladyjess429 Says:

not prego but…. I love tshirt dresses…and you might too for when you get bumpalicious (hehe). They are usually a nice A-line cut so they don’t grip your belly and they are soft too do they won’t make your skin crawl. I picked up a couple at JC Penney and Kohl’s and I wear them with leggings (which I am sure you won’t because of the possible swelling and what not, or you might find maternity leggings you like). But they are a must have for comfy wear!

That link is like the one I have, but too expensive. Check Target or Walmart even. They are super cheap.

    • nogoodhandlename Says:

well either way….. it sounds like it was a step in the right direction.

at least those bras are getting used again!! damn things are pricey.

“so that i can pad around the house and feel like a hot mama, and be warm at the same time. “– AWESOME :) i think that’s exactly what you need to do.

any possibility on getting one semi-splurge maternity item? it might help that “cheap make-do clothes” feeling. orrrr if you’re like me, just accessorize like crazy. it always helps me feel like what im wearing is special.

    • BellsOn Says:

It is. not much fun to spend money on clothes you know you won’t be wearing for very long. :(

I had a few maternity turtlenecks that I wore under my regular size jackets. There is a big difference in maternity pants from one pair to the next, so when I found a pair I liked, I bought it in 3 colors. A really wide band worked well for me in the later stages, when it goes under the belly. My belly was ginormous. My first child weighed 9lb. 12oz. and his head was off the charts for his size. (yes, ouch)

    • JoBones Says:

One response is to ignore it. First off, if your stomach is not giving you any indication, and you’re prowling cabinets, you’re probably bored or procrastinating something else. It’s not hunger. Avoidance is not generally a useful tactic, so try to find something else to occupy your nervousness; as suggested earlier today, try making yourself physically active with a video game, or a walk outdoors.

Secondly though, try setting a rule that you won’t respond to hunger for 30 or 60 minutes. I have found that hunger often simply goes away. I don’t mean skip a meal, but if you’re hungry between planned doses of nutritive intake.
