lol my condiment was going to be syrup

I just had a flashback to “Elf”. Mom: You like sugar, huh?
Buddy: Is there sugar in syrup?
Mom: Yes.
Buddy: Then yesssss.
I love that movie. “We elves try to stick to the four main food groups: candy, candy canes, candy corns and syrup.”
and that’s why i go with the sugar free stuff
§.
Ha! I love Elf! My kids have it memorized! §.

Cooking method for veggies? Grilled.

And finally, do you prefer to cook alone or do you like help? Alone when in my kitchen because it’s so small, but I love cooking with my mum at her house(s) and grilling in summer with FH and the munchkin.
Well….. I don’t usually follow cookbooks, only look for references. I do like the Taste of Home books though.
I’m a big fan of good cutlery, though if I had to choose my most used utensil in my kitchen, it’s my silicone tongs.
My best small appliance is my foreman grill.
I love to steam my veggies.
I most often use curry.
I’m a big fan of ketchup, but mustards make it in my dishes not on them.
When I’m cooking, I usually take up the kitchen well by myself and find others to be in the way.
I need a set of tongs §.
Mine hardly ever get put away. §.
awesome. cookbook: My bible, The Job of cooking from everything from a wide array of recipes, how-to debone a chicken, bake a frzoen pie, types of meats etc…

change to. my Shun knives after reading others’ posts. The bestas long as you keep them sharpen. Well worth the money.

I prefer cooking alone only because my kitchen is tiny and anyone helping not only gets in the way, but distracts me.
nice poll!.
Cookbook?
I mostly just read cookbooks, not cook from them.
My favorite one right now is a copy of the Frugal Gourmet on Our Immigrant Ancestors, borrowed from my grandmother’s house. There is a recipe for faux bulgogi in there that I am determined to make someday.
Cooking utensil?
In terms of usefulness, metal tongs and silicone spatulas.
But just because I like it, a little spiral egg whisk.
Small appliance (ex microwave, blender)?
My rice cooker.
Cooking method for veggies?
Steamed or roasted.
Herb and/or spice to use in cooking?
Garlic and red pepper flakes are tied ftw.
Condiment?
Sriracha!
And finally, do you prefer to cook alone or do you like help?
I prefer to cook alone for a ton of people, with that ton visiting with me in and out while I cook and having a good time in other rooms where I can hear them. If I have a helper who can find their own equipment and actually do a task without me explaining and then showing every single step and can help without using fifty dishes and utensils and leaving a big mess behind, then I’m ok with a helper. Otherwise, I most enjoy cooking when I’m multi-tasking and working the hey out of my kitchen by myself.
mine. Cookbook? this one
Cooking utensil? silicone spatula DEFINITELY
Small appliance (ex microwave, blender)? my scale
Cooking method for veggies? Nuke em

I love maple syrup BTW.. And thanks for the conversation yesterday. I’m definitely going to up the amount of protein I intake, between animal and vegetable sources. I appreciate your input.
Me. Cookbook? How to Cook Everything Vegetarian by Mark Bittman
Cooking utensil? spatula
Small appliance (ex microwave, blender)? food processor
Cooking method for veggies? depends; sauteed or roasted
Herb and/or spice to use in cooking? garlic; for seasoning it’s Fox Point blend from Penzey’s.
Condiment? mustard
And finally, do you prefer to cook alone or do you like help? With a nod to Jewel, I like to be the one drinking a glass of wine as my DH cooks; barring that I enjoy when the two of us cook together.
I love penzy’s §.
I just started getting their magazine. and it’s fantastic (although not exactly DIFO-friendly). But, IMO, it’s whole foods and it works with my healthy eating plan, so I like it!
I’ll bite. Cookbook? “The Moosewood Cooperative Low fat Favorite”but I love all of them.
Cooking utensil? Tongs with my microplaner coming in a close 2nd.
Small appliance (ex microwave, blender)? Excluding my digital scale, it would be my V- Slicer

Herb and/or spice to use in cooking? The Japanese spice mix “Shimishi Togarashi.”
Condiment? Dijon mustard with horseradish
And finally, do you prefer to cook alone or do you like help? I like to cook alone, but I love to share the results.
oh yeah I love that Japanese stuff too §.
nice!. cookbook: Joy of Cooking, because it has instructions for how to do almost anything.
Cooking utensil: I love my 3 nesting plastic cutting boards from Crate and Barrel. They have a rolled edge so that juice doesn’t escape all over the counter.
Small appliance: I ♥ my toaster, but maybe my Cuisinart Mini-prep? A toss-up, I guess.
Cooking veggies: roasting!!!
Herb/spice: tough call, but I seem to be attracted to recipes with a cumin and coriander combo.
Condiment: vinegar!!! I love vinegar!!!
When cooking I really appreciate help with prep, because I get tired of peeling and chopping.
I forgot about my OXO garlic press.. It’s the best thing since sliced bread, seriously!
cumin is the bomb
. one of my favorite guilty snacks consists of baked blue tortilla chips, low-fat cheese, tomatoes, and a TON of cumin nuked in the microwave and topped with diced avocado and a dollop of greek yogurt.
mmm…sounds yummy!!!! §.
yay, cooking!. Cookbook? Um. “I Like You: Hospitality Under the Influence” by Amy Sedaris? I like cookbooks a lot, but I usually use the Interwebs for recipes. And cooking shows and magazines. I like Cook’s Illustrated/America’s Test Kitchen stuff a lot, but their mind-numbing number of cookbooks is a put-off.
Cooking utensil? Sharp knives. I didn’t think I was able to cook until I got some.
Small appliance (ex microwave, blender)? Hmm. Crock pot, I suppose.
Cooking method for veggies? Varies by season and veggie. Right now, if I have to cook a veggie, I’m probably not very happy about it. Warm weather = raw veggies. In other seasons, roasting wins.
Herb and/or spice to use in cooking? Oh man. This is tough. I suppose cayenne.
Condiment? Sambal Oelek.
And finally, do you prefer to cook alone or do you like help? Alone. I’m pretty spazzy in the kitchen. Things usually turn out well, but if people saw the process, they’d probably be concerned about what they were about to eat.
LOL about the spazzy cooking techniques.. It’s the results that matter not the process. (Thank goodness!)
mine. Cookbook: I really have grown to use the internet more than anything, but I do really like Rachael Ray’s stuff (I just modify the heck out them to make them healthy!!!!)
Utensil: My super-ultra non-stick skillet
Appliance: Cuisinart
Cooking method: Steaming/roasting tied
Herb/spice: Rosemary or cilantro
condiment: SRIRACHA (or anything else mind-searingly hot)
I prefer to cook alone, but if someone wants to talk to me while I am doing it, that’s fine.
I have two. of Rachel Ray’s 30 minute meal cookbooks…as much as she annoys me, both of those cookbooks have given me great ideas for meals.
I have 3 of those. A lot of her meals are pretty heavy, but they are easy to make changes/substitutions to. (and they really are about 30 minutes!!!!) I have become a huge fan!!!
okay. Poll: What’s your favorite… < Amanda20 > 05/20 10:15:42
Cookbook? my grandmothers recipe book she made for her sister as her wedding gift
Cooking utensil?
silicon spatula
Small appliance (ex microwave, blender)?
french press/coffee maker at work
Cooking method for veggies? raw mainly.
Herb and/or spice to use in cooking? herbs de provence grinder
Condiment?
um, can I say hummus? I use it a lot
And finally, do you prefer to cook alone or do you like help? alone.
there is something. about lavender in food that really throws me. Maybe because my grandmother always had lavender sachets in with her clothes? I feel like I am perfuming my food. *grimace*
really?. I adore it. I find it so versatile – but I understand that associations can throw other tastes off.
Mine. Cookbook? I don’t really have one that I use frequently. I tend to look recipes online. For that I like cookinglight.com and recipezaar.com
Cooking utensil? My new egg slicer/cuber thingie
Small appliance (ex microwave, blender)? My new toaster. After having a crappy one for so long, I finally have a nice one and it makes such a difference.
Cooking method for veggies? Oven roasted. It’s still the only way I like some veggies.
Herb and/or spice to use in cooking? Does garlic count? I could add garlic to anything.
Condiment? Honey mustard. Yum.
And finally, do you prefer to cook alone or do you like help? I don’t think I’ve ever had help, so I’m going to have to say alone. Although my favorite would be to have someone else do the cooking and cleaning up afterwards.
Which toaster did you get? I’ve been looking. and having the hardest time deciding.
This one. granted, it’s not super pricey, but for ages I had of those that you’d get at walmart for less than $10, so this is a big step up.
So far I’m loving it. I keep it on 3 and that toasts up bread very well. The bagel button works well for them and the defrost button has worked well for frozen waffles.
And it was on sale when I got it, too.

Thank you, looks like a winner §.
I have the 4 slice model of that exact toaster. §.
I have the same one. I’ve had it for quite a while, and I have no complaints
good poll, Amanda. Cookbook:
anything by Cooking Light, although I haven’t read a lot of cookbooks in general
Cooking Utensil:
garlic press. i use mine almost daily.
Cooking method for veggies:
I eat a lot of my veggies raw, but if not then roasting or a quick saute.
Herb and/or spice:
fresh ground black pepper
Condiment: salsa
I have no kids or spouse or friends that like to cook like I do, so come to think of it I am rarely offered help in the kicthen. But I think I like it that way.
oops. i forgot small appliance.
but i don’t really use appliances all that often…
when I do, I’d say my mini-chopper. it is like a food processor but a lot smaller and easier to use and it gets the job done when finely chopping something by hand won’t cut it.
Good poll. Cookbook: Joy of Cooking (somehow acquired 3 different editions) and the Googling the Internet
Cooking utensil: Sharp knives
Small appliance (ex microwave, blender): microwave
Cooking method for veggies: Steam or grill
Herb and/or spice to use in cooking: Garlic & shallots
Condiment: mustard
And finally, do you prefer to cook alone or do you like help: Usually just the 2 of us & I do all the cooking so I end up cooking alone.
If the right person was there (one who doesn’t need alot of direction, stays out of my way, and cleans up after themselves), it would be fun to cook together.
fun!. Cookbook: I love Moosewood and Enchanted Broccoli Forest. I’m not a vegetarian but I love the dishes they have in there. I also read Food magazine once in a while, and it is great.
Utensil: wooden spoon.
Appliance: Coffe maker. Teehee. It’s the nicest appliance I own.
Cooking veggies: stir-fry.
Herb/spice: hmmm. Paprika. Cayenne is a recent fave, also. And I have some fancy mixes from Penzey’s for curries and other things.
Condiment: soy sauce and hoisin sauce. Salsa.
Cook alone: I get help. Actually, my BF is a MUCH better cook than I am. We’re talking reads the food blogs, replicates fancy restaurant dishes, uses ingredients I’ve never heard of. And he has been really great about accomodating my healthy lifestyle with his cooking. So I am really more like the sous-chef in this relationship.
My favorites:. Cookbook?…..Ummm, vegweb.com? If I had to pick a BOOK, I’ll go with BCoops’ old standby: How to Cook Vegetarian by Mark Bittman
Cooking utensil?…… I always call it my Sudoku knife, but I know that’s wrong. It’s the sharp one with little dimples so things don’t stick to the blade.
Small appliance (ex microwave, blender)?……. Microwave.
Cooking method for veggies?……. Roasted or steamed. Or grilled, if it’s summer and someone else is cooking.
Herb and/or spice to use in cooking?……. Garlic. Or The Spice House’s Pilsen Latino Seasoning. Or truffle salt. Mmmmmm, truffle salt.
Condiment?………. Sriracha.
And finally, do you prefer to cook alone or do you like help?….. Usually by myself. Though I did have a cooking buddy for Iron Difo, but it was more like we cooked separately, side by side, on our own dishes. We weren’t really helping each other. That was fun.
Santoku
§.
Dingo says…. Cookbook? Hrm. The IntarTubes, usually, though still have a soft spot for Betty Crocker.
Cooking utensil? Knives. Really sharp knives. There’s an awesome shop in Alameda called Japanese Woodworker which has some delish cutlery, up to multi-thousand-dollar watered Damascus steel blades. I’d settle for a nice $100 or so chef’s knife though, and something for paring. I did pick up a nice water stone for sharpening.
Small appliance (ex microwave, blender)? Most-used appliance: stove-top espresso maker. After that it’s the blender or toaster oven. Really not one for toys, at least not in the kitchen. Though I’ve been hankering after a KitchenAid for a while.
Cooking method for veggies? I often prefer to eat ‘em raw. Frequently steamed, though roasted is best.
Herb and/or spice to use in cooking? Thyme & garlic. No, you can’t limit me to just one.
Condiment? Salsa.
And finally, do you prefer to cook alone or do you like help? That really depends on the help, what’s cooking, and how she’s helping.
Henckles Chef Knife! §.
Japan Woodworker. Their knives.
My first introduction was at a friend’s house. Was slicing an apple, dug through the knife drawer, found a cleaver-looking thing. Dropped it through the apple, sides clung to the blade. I look at the edges I’ve just sliced — WTF?
Sliced off an apple shaving — a thin film of apple, easy as can be. “Woah, this is a knife.”
Definite droolage.
Awesome store.. I bought some woodworking tools from them years ago.
I can totally believe that the knives are drool-worthy
LOL §.
better late tha never….
Cookbook? Joy of Cooking
Cooking utensil? Whisk
Small appliance (ex microwave, blender)? Food Processor
Cooking method for veggies? Grilled
Herb and/or spice to use in cooking? Garlic
Condiment? Mustard or Tabasco.
And finally, do you prefer to cook alone or do you like help?
It depends who I am cooking with, but either one is fine.
My answers:. Don’t use cookbooks
Don’t have a favorite utensil
Small appliance: George Foreman Grill
Depends on the veggie but steamed mainly
Seasoned salt is my favorite
Unfortunately my favorite condiment is mayo…but I use it very sparingly these days
GET OUT OF MY KITCHEN!! Can’t stand people to be in my way…LOL
Always the outcast…. Cookbook?
…my spontaneous imagination
Cooking utensil?
…paring knife
Small appliance (ex microwave, blender)?
…toaster oven…I don’t use a full-size at all
Cooking method for veggies?
…quick-steam in 1/4″ of water in a fry pan
Herb and/or spice to use in cooking?
…fresh vegs need nothing at all, so I’d say simply “buying fresh” is the best herb/spice
Condiment?
…none, other than exactly one tsp olive oil sometimes used for stir-fry.
And finally, do you prefer to cook alone or do you like help?
…doesn’t matter. Honestly, if the woman I’m trying to seduce finds it sexy that I cook, then I want her in the kitchen with me, if it turns her on. Otherwise, it hardly matters. If it’s an evening to be with someone, I want her there all the time, and if it’s me alone, then I’m alone. Either is fine.
