Major success. I travel on a really regular basis–about 1600 miles every month, spending about 26 hours in the car once a month.
Road trips are always hard for me because I just want to get where I’m going, and I’m usually fairly rushed and stressed, so cheeseburgers and poptarts tend to be my diet staples while I travel. Basically, being on the road a lot was an excuse I used to eat crap.
I embarked on one of my 1600 mile trips with DH this weekend, and we did a lot of pre-planning. I boiled 4 eggs, bagged up some carrots sticks and a tub of hummus, and bought 3 footlong turkey subs on wheat from Subway, no cheese, no mayo, packed with veggies. I stuck everything in the cooler.
On the drive out, breakfast was courtesy of 7-11, about 300 calories, and consisted of a Nature’s Valley granola bar and a no-sugar added, all-fruit smoothie.
Lunch was from the cooler– a 6″ sub (380 calories) for lunch with carrot sticks, and the same again for dinner.
On the way home, we stopped at a QuickTrip for breakfast, and got a bowl of fresh fruit, another Nature’s Valley granola bar, and some part-skim string cheese. We added all that to the hardboiled eggs I packed. (450 calories)
Lunch (420 calories, also bought at QT) was another 6″ sub apiece, with apple slices.
We probably ate too much bread and not enough protein, but not being able to leave the car for very long to sit in a restaurant (our dog was with us), we did the best we could. We rarely had to leave the car to eat, and we each ate under 1400 calories each day we were driving. When we got home, I didn’t feel sluggish and lethargic, didn’t feel bloated and heavy, and was really proud that a little planning went such a long way.

WTG! I know you are a planner by nature. correct? Nice job of thinking ahead.
great planning!
§.
go girl!. planning your meals ahead is totally key when you are trying to eat healthy because we all know that you are not going to get anything healthy much less nutritious from fast food!
being on the road must be hard for you and your diet,I know i am always tempted to snack the whole way!
but keep up the good work and keep planning ahead! it will so pay off, like it did for you on this trip:)
and you will physically feel so much better too….there is no worse feeling than the sluggish aftermath of eating fast food!
Great job, D!. HOWEVER, your DH is a pretty big guy and “under 1,400 cals” doesn’t seem like it would be enough food for him?
He’s. 5′10″ and about 250, he’s not THAT big anymore. But yeah, I agree, he should have probably eaten more, but he kept saying he wasn’t hungry whenever I’d ask.
Unfortunately, he follows my dieting lead, and is constantly comparing what I eat to his own diet. I don’t think he’s wrapped his mind around the fact that he’s a foot taller than me, he needs to eat more than I do.
i like the way you’re thinkin’. congrats for planning ahead! that’s a heck of a lot of traveling.
Good for you! §.
Good for you.. I bet it’s extra hard to stick to a diet plan on the road, even when you have healthy food with you. I know that when I travel I want to eat tasty fattening junk even more, probably to make up for the discomfort of the travel.
Woohoo!!. Great job recognizing the challenge and doing something about it!
I’m super proud of you.
