I’m tired of the typical spagetti…. with the Prego Traditional sauce and my signature spicy habanero ground beef. Are there any other cheap alternatives? Can I cook up something good with the spagetti pasta? Any recommendations? I’m a recent grad paying off student loans trying to eat healthy and economically. Any good comments would be appreciated.

Healthy dieting…. I’m trying to eat healthy… but cheaply… maybe both forums?
Absolutely!
I just know that most people. here don’t eat pasta, so if you’re looking specifically for recipes with a pasta base, you may not get much feedback.
Wheat Pasta. Google: Pastagarofalo and look for Spaghettini.
This is what I get at Costco…
I don’t even do the wheat pasta. still too carby for me, but thanks for the link. I will sometimes eat Dreamfield’s pasta (which has negligle digestible carbs)in a VERY small portion, maybe twice a month. But it isn’t exactly “cheap,” I usually pay around $3 box. (it’s about 3X the price of regualr pasta.)
you can put anything you want on pasta. like shayna said, i don’t eat pasta either, but, you can add any combination of veggies (my faves are usually asparagus and mushrooms, cherry tomatoes and green beans, bell pepper and broccoli, but really, whatever you like) with any kind of protein (shrimp, diced chicken, strips of steak, etc, or you can leave that out) and then whatever kind of sauce base you want, typically white, red, green (like pesto) or just olive oil/butter.
huh. i thought i’d miss it more typing all that out. seems i don’t, really.
how about…. If you are going healthy I would use a can of diced tomatoes (many pasta sauces have sugar added to them) oregano, basil, seasoning salt, garlic and onion.
Then for toppings
veggies (as others suggested) shredded carrots and zucchini cooked in the tomato sauce is tasty.
Instead of beef how about chicken with the sauce…
Or skip the red sauce and make a white sauce (look up a basic recipe). you can minimize the butter and through in some asparagus (or red pepper or any other veggie) and chicken and roasted garlic cloves.
If you buy a whole chicken and roast it it gives you lots of meat to play with.
If you are using beef I would use lean 90/10 beef.
a million things. First, I hope that’s wheat pasta!
I eat pasta maybe once every month or two. Just a 1/2 cup of wheat angel hair.
You can easily put chicken or shrimp in it. (both with pasta sauces). veggie ‘meatballs’. Or canned sauce that comes with zucchini in it. They have that in the canned veggie section for lessthen 2 bucks.
Or you can stirfry some fresh veggies, mushrooms, peppers, onions and throw that over it, sprinkle with reduced sodium soy for some taste.
No need to buy prego!. There are so many ways to make your own sauce.
Easy, too!
I always have canned tomato sauce, canned diced tomatoes and tomato paste on hand. Other staples are olive oil, garlic, onions, basil, parsley, oregano…
Quick, easy sauce can start with sauteeing diced garlic and onions. You can add veggies as you like-mushrooms, zucchini, peppers, etc….
Add sauce, diced tomatoes, paste… (or any combination depending)
You can also add grilled chicken (keep bag in freezer).
Another real basic sauce is olive oil, garlic, oregano, basil and crushed tomaters. I used this more for toppings for chicken and pizza.
If you are going for economy, rice and beans are good basics.
peanut noodles. For one person, you can make a sauce out of a couple of tablespoons of peanut butter (crunchy or smooth), a sprinkle of Tobasco or hot chili flakes and warm water (to thin the sauce to a creamlike consistency). If you want to get fancy, you can add a few drops of toasted sesame oil, garlic, ginger, lime juice. Play around with it. It’s a very forgiving sauce.
Toss the sauce with warm pasta and, if you want to be really easy and cheap about it, a bag of mixed, frozen vegetables like broccoli, red bell pepper, onion, snow peas, and some plain broiled chicken or tofu. Top with sliced green onions and/or cilantro and/or raw grated carrot.
The beauty of this is you can toss in just about any veggie you have, and it works. You can eat it warm or cold. It keeps well. It’s easy to have the ingredients on hand to make it whenever. Oh, and whole-wheat spaghetti is much better in this recipe than semolina, imo.
this sounds great!. Think I know what I’m trying for dinner tonight!
Thanks so much for sharing! : )
I’ve done that with spaghetti squash too. and it is YUMMY. Hmm, maybe I will do that tonight!!!!!
